Why Use This Tool?
- Get an accurate length based on your *actual* pattern pieces.
- Save money by not overbuying material.
- Test "what-if" scenarios: 'Will my pattern fit on this 90cm wide linen?'
- Works with both Metric (cm) and Imperial (in) units.
- Automatically adds your chosen seam allowance for quick entry.
How to Use It
- 1. Select your units (Metric or Imperial).
- 2. Enter the width of your fabric roll (e.g., 150 cm or 60 in).
- 3. Set a default seam allowance (the tool adds this to each piece).
- 4. Add your first pattern piece's length, width, and quantity.
- 5. Click "+ Add Piece" for every main piece in your pattern.
- 6. Click "Calculate" to see the total length of fabric required.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does this calculator work?
It uses a "bin packing" algorithm. It lays out your tallest pieces first and tries to fit shorter pieces next to them, up to the fabric width. It then starts a new "row" and adds the lengths together.
What about pieces cut "on the fold"?
For a piece cut on the fold, enter its **full, unfolded width** and its length. For example, a 30cm wide pattern piece marked "on the fold" should be entered as 60cm wide.
Does this account for fabric grain or one-way patterns?
This tool assumes all pieces are laid out in the same direction (along the grain). It does not rotate pieces to fit. For one-way patterns, this estimate is accurate.
