The width you cut (not the finished size).
How much tape does your pattern require?
Why Use This Tool?
- Two modes: "Calculate Yield" and "Calculate Fabric Needed".
- Works for squares or rectangular scraps.
- Supports the popular "Continuous Loop" (tube) cutting method.
- Minimises fabric waste by doing the geometry for you.
How to Use It
- 1. Choose your goal: Do you have fabric (Yield), or do you need binding (Fabric Needed)?
- 2. Enter the width of the bias tape you plan to cut (unfolded width).
- 3. Enter your fabric dimensions OR your required length.
- 4. Click "Calculate" to see the results.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the "Unfolded Width"?
This is the width of the strip *before* you iron it. For example, a standard 12mm (1/2") double-fold bias tape usually starts as a 25mm (1") or 48mm (2") wide strip. Check your bias tape maker tool for the correct cutting width.
Does this account for the seams?
The calculator assumes the "Continuous Loop" method where seams are negligible compared to the total length. However, we factor in a small waste buffer for squaring off the edges.
Can I use a rectangle?
Yes! While the Continuous Loop method is easiest with a square, you can calculate the potential yield from any rectangle using the "Calculate Yield" tab.
